A bucolic image age Tybee Island at it's restful best.

It’s been  just over a year since my adventure to Tybee began last summer. I was editing photos and realized how many were never used. Here are some highlights of my trip. Diane Kaufman of Mermaid Cottages has been a great and very close friend for many years. She gave me the opportunity to work with her, the staff of Mermaid Cottages and Joy Pohjalainen at Tybee Joy Vacation Rentals for 2 months summer. Truly it was a very challenging learning curve for me but a valuable addition to my skill-set.

I worked for both companies as the guest services contact person. Translated, I had two guest services phones in my pocket for 60 days 24 hours a day. My summation statement after the fact was simple. I will never complain about anything in a hotel ever again as long as I live. I encountered the best and the worst personalities imaginable.

Included in the images are some of Diane’s Mermaids. These are the very hard working ladies and men who run housekeeping and trouble shoot all. They keep their guests happily ensconced in their rental cottages. Occasionally to accomplish that they need things. On one such occasion they needed a can opener. I coined the term “Mermraided” for the night I reached for Diane’s can opener and realized it had been confiscated for a guest who discovered their cottage didn’t have one. Undaunted I picked up a screw driver and opened the can by force.

I certainly didn’t starve while I was in the Savannah, Tybee Island area. I was taken to both of Paula Deen‘s restaurants. There are 2 photos of me at Lady And Sons and Uncle Bubba’s In spite of the very rich nature of the fare and my insistence on healthy diet, I had two great meals there. Charcoal oven roasted oysters will be my number one food memory from Uncle Bubba’s. I also found a great pork loin on the Lady And Sons menu. I can heartily recommend both restaurants. I try not to get involved in politics, religious issues or controversy. My heart goes out to Paula Deen. Being from New England and having lived in Salem Mass I know what a witch hunt is all about. She will survive!

If you ever get the opportunity to visit this region please do. Both of these rental companies are great. If one is full up the other may have a vacancy. You would be well advised to call you reservation shots well in advance. The time between June 15 to August 15 is their very busy season. Enjoy the Island! I certainly did.
